If someone told me last year that I would be asked to photograph Camp Bisco Eleven?!? I would have probably shrugged it off in efforts to not get my hopes up..but I was asked and I did shoot the hell out of it...here are my photos to prove it:

Well...I survived. I did it. I made it through in one piece...and have the photos to prove it! Bonnaroo was everything I thought it would be..it was hot, sweaty, fun, and full of culture. Sure, there were times that I wished I had access to the photo pits so I could have delivered some gnarly photos...but then there were times where a dancing golden retriever would waltz on by in a tutu and remind me that life is beautiful. Fact: this dog is a fucking rockstar and has more spunk than I ever had on the dance floor! Check out his Bonnaroo debut HERE! I could blog for hours on end about my experience at the ROO, but for the sake of your attention span, I shall cover 4 main things: atmosphere, artists, graffiti culture, & the Joonbug media pass experience! ATMOSPHERE. This photo pretty much explains it all.. You go to Bonnaroo, well, correction: I went to Bonnaroo, to escape all reality. Escape the everyday grind, escape the familiar faces, escape the "norm." Well, I certainly came to the right place... For those of you who don't know, Bonnaroo is a music and arts festival. There are a fuck-ton of vendors which offer all sorts of food, apparel, art and festi-goodies. When I wasn't sitting in the shade boppin' my head to all different genres of music, I was people watching and shopping with whatever little money I had. Personally, I don't know what was better... people watching at the Walmart super center right outside Bonnaroo or within the festival itself.. To my surprise, people were camped outside that very Walmart, tents and all! I didn't know if this was a Bonnaroo thing or just a Manchester Tennessee thing.. in either case it was thoroughly entertaining. In a nut shell: A lot of RV's A lot of HIPPIES A lot of party people **Epic shot taken from the stage during The Beach Boys set** ARTISTS. RADIOHEAD. THE BEACH BOYS. RHCP. SKRILLEX. PHISH Radiohead. Radiohead was pretty great.. they played a bunch of their old songs, one of which was Idioteque, a personal favorite! I enjoyed the songs but after a while it kind of just felt like I was surrounded by a bunch of dosed kids who were standing there like cattle. I didn't need a full set to enjoy the show...but, everyone else seemed to be quite content! The Beach Boys. To my surprise, The Beach Boys set was my all-time favorite of the whole festival...not to mention a moment I don't think I will ever forget. Imagine being on stage...with a world renown band...in front of hundreds upon thousands of people. Yeah, you could say my mind was blown. Throughout my time in TN, I managed to master the art of finagling my way into areas of Bonnaroo that I had absolutely no business being in, one of which was on-stage. These photos will remain special and dear to me for a very long time.. RHCP. The Red Hot Chili Peppers were honestly quite disappointing... they appeared to be some washed up band that really didn't bring the energy I had hoped for. Two thumbs..DOWN! Never the less, I was happy to cross one more band off my wish-list. Again, I managed to get myself into the "artist" area for their set... SKRILLEX. Yeah...I am still trying to find my face, for I believe I left it there while being absolutely mind-fucked for a solid set. I know a bunch of people who love to hate on him, but truthfully, I find him to be extremely talented. I would see him again..and again..and AGAIN. He certainly contributed to my Roo experience to say the least :) I decided to put the camera down and enjoy myself for this set.. I was however able to get a picture of the crowd trying to bust through the gates in order to get to him! Pretty great. PHISH.PHISH.PHISH.PHISH.PHISH.PHISH.PHISH.PHISH.PHISH. Honestly... I don't even really need to comment here...after all it IS phish...I'll leave it at that! OTHER. Aside from these huge acts, there were a number of other bands that deserve a few words... First of all, The Shins= major disappointment.. I would have been better off seeing FUN. Childish Gambino & Flying Lotus killed it... LEROY! This man needs no introduction! Real cool guy. BIG GIGANTIC. Really wish I had a sense of what type of music they made, especially since we were interviewing them.. more importantly, I wish I caught their act the night before but I crapped out pretty early. Real chill guys.. especially Jeremy.. wound up having a nice little dance session mid-phish! PHANTOGRAM GRAFFITI CULTURE. Anyone who knows me knows that I am an absolute graffiti fanatic! The last festival I went to that had some kick-ass graffiti was Camp Bisco.. check out the graffiti I stumbled across at Bonnaroo. JOONBUG. Got a fancy wrist-band different from the generic one that gave me a little bit more access than the average Joe. I also had access to the press tent as well as all the free water my little heart desired! Was definitely a plus! In these photos:
Dax, Fitz, Kristen Bell, Dancing Retriever, Richard Gervays, Little Dragon and more! Charlotte Sometimes killed it tonight on The Voice...I couldn't help but pay homage to her! You go girl! She may refer to herself as Charlotte "Sometimes," but she definitely always sings her heart out! Hands down, best performance of the night! Great job Charlotte!! Check out this photo I took of Charlotte in NYC_2/4/11 She rocked then and she definitely rocks now! Keep it up girl
Who better to photograph then a no-nonsense sassy gal like Wendy! For more information on this event click here.
The world is full of coincidences and meeting Art Koch was no exception! Art and I couldn't be any more different. For Example: He's big, I'm little He's older, I'm younger He's wiser, I'm...well, still learning He has a law degree, I have a BFA He's married with kids, I'm still living at home (don't judge) Get the point? But what I find most interesting about all of this is that although Art and I have our differences, our work is extremely similar. Its actually quite fascinating to me...I mean here are two people who have never met before, who are in completely different stages of life, yet have identical works of art. What better way to explore our interesting dynamic then with a photo shoot! My top picks of the day: Art had his work cut out for him, for I am not one to want my picture taken...hence why my face is covered in most of these. Great work Art!
My favorite part of the day? Working with my grandfathers magnifying glass. Fashion's Night Out is wonderful because not only are you exposed to a plethora of different design perspectives, freebees and products, but you are also exposed to a variety of people. The first and most memorable artist I had the pleasure of meeting that night was Frank Caracciolo. We made small talk and it was at that time that he shared some words of wisdom which go against what many photographers and artists have told me in the past. His exact words escape my memory but his message remains embedded in my head. In the past, artists and photographers have told me that this is a dying industry and that I should bite the bullet, move on and find a more secure job... But Caracciolo's message not only contrasted the words of others but inspired me to keep creating works of art. Rather then move on, he advised me to move forward. Stick with it. Keep creating art. Believe in yourself and your artistic abilities and good things will come. But enough about me, lets get to Frank! Caracciolo's work is unique because he turns his beautiful oil paintings into wearable women's clothes. His designs are colorful and most definitely wearable. You can view more of Caracciolo's beautiful artworks by visiting his website: www.frankcaracciolo.com What was described to be a mix between Coachella and Burning Man, Escape To New York, was certainly not your average run of the mill music festival. This festival focused not only on music but the arts and some scrumptious cuisine as well! This festival captivated my attention right from the get-go due to the fact that it emulated a fantastical land similar to that of Alice In Wonderland. Normally, I enjoy people watching on Phish Tour or at your local Walmart Supercenter but this festival trumped both scenes! People were animated with costumes just as colorful as their imaginations! Everything stated within Escape To New York's manifesto was pretty accurate. For example, Exhibit A is a photo used on the festivals website to give a preview as to what's to be expected. Exhibit B is what I came to find. Exhibit A: Exhibit B: I've attended many festivals in my day, however, none hold a flame to the art instillations showcased at the Escape To New York Festival. Each piece was innovative, varying in medium, purpose, and sense of scale. While enjoying an overpriced nice cold beer, a fellow festi-goer approached me asking if I had stumbled into the woods yet... I replied "no." It was at that time that this perfect stranger suggested I waltz on over and check out one particular piece, he referred to as "disturbing." If this doesn't change your perception of good old Bambi, I don't know what will. I'm unsure what would possess one to construct such a _____________ (insert witty word here), but I do give this artist an A+. Why? Shock art. I am a firm believer in creating artworks which evoke emotion. Whether you are repulsed or titillated is irrelevant, the fact of the matter is, this piece impacted your mind in some way, causing you to have a reaction. She certainly got a rise out of many people, thus making this piece a success! Kudos! ***STAY TUNED!*** Part 2 of Escape 2 New York will cover: the ever evolving scenery, music artists & any other random bullshit I can blog about! "Escaping A Teepee At Escape To New York Festival" A few months ago, I blogged about my trip to the Hallmark Institute of Photography! I did a few poses here and there for a girlfriend of mine and the proofs finally came back! Although it's absolutely wonderful to have a photo like this to look back on when I'm nice and old...I think my place is behind the camera! I've had the pleasure of seeing this photographer grow tremendously throughout her time at Hallmark and it was a real treat to work with her. Look out for Mayella Lopez everyone, she's a force to be reckoned with!
First gig shooting for Live For Live Music (.com) ... unfortunately we were not able to get a press pass in time, so my dinky point and shoot camera just had to do!
